UGA 2024 High School Math Tournament

The University of Georgia’s Department of Mathematics and Math Club are excited to host the High School Mathematics Tournament on Saturday, October 26th, 2024, at the Zell B. Miller Learning Center on the UGA Campus.

Registration

To complete the registration, contact the organizers (see below).

Participation:

  • Schools can register one to three teams, each consisting of four students, to compete in the written and ciphering rounds. Teams with fewer than four members are allowed, but missing members will receive a score of zero.
  • Individual participants not affiliated with a team are also welcome to compete.

Limits:

  • Each school may register up to 3 teams or a maximum of 12 students. This limit is strictly enforced.
  • Registration ends on October 16th. Team members must be declared by that day. No last minute changes will be accepted.

Fees:

  • $50 per team
  • $20 per individual participant
  • $5 for each additional chaperone beyond the first
  • A late fee of $5 applies for payments made after October 16th.

After completing the registration, participants will receive an email containing payment instructions and necessary forms. The payment covers breakfast and snacks but does not include lunch. Lunch can be purchased at Bolton Dining Commons, located across the street, for $12.20 per person; at the Tate Center (Chick-fil-A, Pizza, etc.); or Downtown. The email will also include forms that need to be completed.

Format

The Tournament consists of three rounds: ciphering, written individual and team.

  1. The ciphering or speed round will consist of 10 problems. 10 points will be awarded for each correct answer given in two minutes.
  2. The written test will consist of 25 multiple-choice problems of increasing difficulty, from relatively easy to very hard. 10 points will be awarded for each correct answer, 2 points for each question left unanswered, and 0 point for each incorrect answer.
  3. The final round will be a team collaboration, with a total of 200 points.

No calculators will be allowed in any of the rounds. The individual winners will be determined on the basis of the first two rounds, and all three rounds will count towards the team competition.

Prizes

The top five winners will get cash prizes, 100,80,60,40 and $20 respectively. There will be also small prizes for other high-scoring individuals and best teams.

Parking

The Miller Learning Center is located in the center of the campus, next to the Tate Student Center and UGA Bookstore, and across from Sanford Stadium. By car, it is best approached from South Lumpkin Street and there is a bus stop there to drop off the students. Parking is available at the nearby Tate Center Two, and across the street at Legion Pool (parking zone W06). Ample parking is available at the parking lot E01 near the Intramural Fields off College Station Road.
