Monday, April 9 2018, 3:30pm Miller Learning Center Dr. Kannan Soundararajan Stanford University Speaker: Kannan Soundararajan (Stanford) Monday, April 9, 2018 3:30pm-4:30pm Miller Learning Center, Room 101 Title of talk: Primes fall for the gambler's fallacy. Abstract: The gambler’s fallacy is the erroneous belief that if (for example) a coin comes up heads often, then in the next toss it is more likely to be tails. In recent work with Robert Lemke Oliver, we found that funnily the primes exhibit a kind of gambler’s fallacy: for example, consecutive primes do not like to have the same last digit. I’ll show some of the data on this, and explain what we think is going on. Tuesday, April 10, 2018 3:30pm-4:30pm Miller Learning Center, Room 150 Title of talk: Recent progress in multiplicative number theory. Abstract: A function is called multiplicative if f(mn)=f(m)f(n) for all coprime natural numbers m and n. Many important functions in number theory are multiplicative, and the study of general multiplicative functions has been very active in recent years. I will discuss some work in this area, including some of my work with Andrew Granville, and the spectacular progress of Matomaki and Radziwill culminating in Tao's resolution of the Erdos discrepancy problem. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 3:30pm-4:30pm Boyd Graduate Studies Bldg., Room 328 Title of talk: Moments and distribution of the Riemann zeta-function and L-functions. Abstract: One of the great unsolved problems in mathematics is the Riemann hypothesis. In this talk I will explain how zeta and L-functions arise naturally in many problems in number theory, and how the Riemann hypothesis shapes our understanding of such problems. I will also discuss recent work aimed at understanding the distribution of values of such L-functions. Refreshments will be served preceeding each talk. A banquet honoring Dr. Kannan Soundararajan will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at The National. If you plan to attend, please pre-register as seating is limited.
