Monday, April 15 2013, 4:05pm Miller Learning Center and Boyd Graduate Studies Building Dr. David Gabai Princeton University April 15, 16, 17, 2013 Monday, April 15, 2013 3:30pm Room 101, Miller Learning Center Title of talk: Poincaré's work on topology Abstract: We will discuss some of Poincare's remarkable seminal and fundamental contributions to topology, its huge impact on subsequent research and open problems flowing from it. Tuesday, April 16, 2013 3:30pm, Room 175, Paul D. Coverdell Center Title of talk: Volumes of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Abstract: We will survey developments in the field, discuss some ongoing work (with R. Meyerhoff and N. Thurston) and state various open problems. Wednesday, April 17, 2013 3:30pm, Room 175, Paul D. Coverdell Center Title of talk: On the topology of ending laminations space Abstract: The Ending lamination space is a naturally defined space associated to a surface of negative Euler characteristic that is important in hyperbolic geometry and geometric group theory. We will discuss recent progress on characterizing the topology of these beautiful and mysterious spaces. Refreshments will be served preceding each lecture. There will be a banquet honoring Prof. Gabai, the evening of Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2013 at the Rialto Club, Hotel Indigo. Pre-registration for banquet is required.
